St. Louis Community Credit Union recently partnered with DeSales Community Development to help sponsor the organization’s community garden. This effort is part of our commitment to providing avenues for access to healthy foods in local communities.
Part of the Solution
The Credit Union set out to tackle matters that deeply impact our members who may have the greatest need. Healthy foods is high on our list of outreach priorities. It addresses our desire to affect those “kitchen table” conversations that our members have daily. We want to be part of the solution.
The DeSales Community Garden is located at 2635 California in the Fox Park/Benton Park area, home of the newly launched South City Wealth Accumulation Center (WAC). The garden itself is a cooperative effort. Neighbors work the land plots. A portion of the food is then given to local, low-income families in need. With the Credit Union’s support, gardeners will have extended access to supplies that will help them grow more produce. This, in turn, provides continued nourishment for the neighborhood.
What Our Partners Say
“DeSales Community Garden is a place where neighborhood residents grow not just food, but also community,“ said Becky Reinhart, DeSales Community Development’s Director of Community Health Initiatives. “This support from St. Louis Community Credit Union will enable us to keep the garden growing strong. We are excited to have St. Louis Community Credit Union as a neighbor and partner!”
DeSales Community Development is a community-based non-profit organization that promotes revitalization, affordable housing and good property management in neighborhoods in and near the City of St. Louis.

In addition to funding support for the plot, the Credit Union plans to offer free community programming at the Excel Center (located inside of the WAC) through classes on healthy eating and gardening.
This effort is a true testament to our giveback. What we do matters.
